Tasseomancy is a divination practice commonly known for tea leaf readings, however you can divine with any food. Last summer on July 12, 2024, I took a couple classes with my friend and mentor Lisa, one of which was Tasseomancy. I was one of 3 volunteers that helped prep the class. Lisa went above and beyond in making and prepping all the food, creating individual

handouts, and making sure every student had the opportunity to engage and ask questions. Every student received a 3-course meal and a cup of tea to divine with. We were the teacher assistants/ caterers, and there if any of the students needed a partner. The students were excited, and ready to eat and learn. The energy was high, and everyone was in good spirits.

The first course we served to the students a garden salad and rolls. Once the students ate the salad they were instructed to look for any images that left over from their salad dressing and any scrapes. The only rule was not to use your roll to soak up any of the left over dressing. If you are going to try this at home avoid using a thin oil dressing, or ranch. A thick dressing with pigment will make the images easier to read.

Next we moved on the pasta dish. Lisa made a homemade pasta sauce to go on top of the noodles. Once you finished your helping you would read the images in the pasta sauce that was left over.

Then for the dessert we passed out bowls of either chocolate ice cream or orange sorbet. As a vegan I brought my own dairy free coffee flavored ice cream that I divined with and got to share with another fellow vegan. This is also where I stepped in and assisted with a student who needed a partner.

She got to practice by reading my ice cream bowl and I read hers. The image shown on the left was my partner’s ice cream bowl. Immediately I noticed a very distinct engagement ring just below the rim of the bowl pointing North. I told the client that I saw the ring and pointed it out to her. I asked her if someone she knew was getting married. She laughed and said that her daughter was getting married in less than a week! My partner and I were both excited over the successful ice cream tasseomancy session we had.

After dessert my fellow caterers, and I cleared people’s bowls and allowed people to select a pre-poured cup of tea and saucer that they could divine with.

For tea leaf readings it is recommend using loose leaf teas and have a saucer. Once you drink your tea, flip your cup upside down on the saucer. Then you read the left-over leaves in the cup, and you can even read the saucer.

After class and hearing all the positive feedback from the students we were vibrating with enthusiasm. I don’t think I ever had been in such a good mood while cleaning and doing dishes. During Lisa’s lecture she spoke about how this is a fun activity to do with kids or grandkids. So naturally I couldn’t wait to teach my own kids everything I had learned about tasseomancy. Little did I know that my daughter would surpass my engagement ring ice cream reading tenfold!

Now for context my family and I are huge animal lovers. We love that our whole family is vegan, we love how we adopt turkeys every Thanksgiving, and we love our recue cats dearly. So much so that if you were to do a CT scan of my children’s brain’s you would probably just see images of cats.

On July 18th after being home for a couple days from Lily Dale, NY, I had the opportunity to give the kids ice cream after dinner. I explained the rules of tasseomancy and they were all in! It was simple enough; eat your ice cream and then use your imagination and look for pictures in your ice cream bowls. And bonus points if you can tell me what you think it means.

Well… My daughter said she saw a cat in her bowl. At first my reaction was, “well that’s to be expected.” But after looking at her ice cream bowl, I realized that she wasn’t wrong. I saw it too!

I jokingly asked my daughter “do you think it means we’re going to get another cat?” Without missing a beat she goes “yes!” Which I knew I lead her to that response, however she knew I was kidding. We had no intention of adopting another cat. Just then my daughter looks up and sees a big grey stray cat walking across our porch. We just stare through the glass sliding doors. The timing of that was really bizarre. So we joked that maybe that the cat she saw in her ice cream bowl was the stray cat.

About a week later I had forgotten all about the tasseomancy lesson after dinner I had given my kids, as a busy mom would.

On July 26, 2024 my friend Laura sent me a picture of the kitten she had been trying to catch in a live trap. She was looking for help because she was leaving down the next day and all the shelters were full and not accepting kittens. I told Laura I would pick up the kitten and try to find a home for it.

To the right is a screenshot of the post I made on Facebook trying to find this grey kitten a home. Efforts were made.

We took the kitten to a local vet to find out the gender, get dewormed, flea and ear mite treatment. She was also test for common kitty diseases and was negative for all. After having no luck finding a home for Meredith Grey our family adopted her. You could say the writing was on the wall… Literally… Because this magical kitty story isn’t over yet!

If you look down to the pictures below you will see that I posted the meme “My wife wanted a cat. I didn’t want a cat. So, we compromised and got 3 cats.” I posted that when I had only 1 cat. The only cat I had at that time was my cat Eevee who is a Ragdoll and looks a lot like the cat on the far right. It wasn’t until November 11th of 2020 did I get my second cat. And of course last but not least our third cat in July of 2024. But please note the similarities between the meme and the breeds. I have a solid grey cat, a grey tabby and a ragdoll. I also recalled asking Dan if this was a meme or a prophecy.

Moving on to the two photos on the bottom… Before we adopted our third cat, I purchased this note pad (image on the bottom left) to use as a grocery list, that I got at Home Goods… Again… A year before we adopted our third cat! Notice the colors?! This was the craziest forshadowing I had ever experinced. This piece of paper was torn off the note pad and was used as a reminder note placed under our family calendar on the cork board for over a year before we adopted Meredith.

Tasseomancy is a form of divination. Using divination tools whether it’s tarot or food, both have the ability to do past, present, or future readings and predictions. And without even breaking a sweat my child excelled in Tasseomancy in the most magical way our family could have ever imagined.

Whenever Lisa teaches a class, she says “Let’s Play.” It is that notion, imagination, and child like mind that will allow the right side of your brain that is responsible for creativity and psychic abilites to come to furition. And for those who believe in magic will always find it, especially if you remember to play. Even if that means remembering to play with your food!
